Your Guide For 2025 Goal Setting
Happy new year to you, welcome to the first Football Progression Path newsletter in 2025.
In this week’s newsletter I’ll be teaching you why goal setting is so important, and how you can effectively set goals for the year ahead.
Make 2025 the year you achieve your goals.
Writing down your goals, setting them, and striving to achieve them is crucial for success in your personal and professional journey. This year, take a proactive approach by breaking down your goals and integrating them into your daily life. This method can make a significant difference in your career, personal business, and personal life.
Most people fail with the goals as they’ll set a few new year resolutions and then forget to look at them again until March, by which point they no longer care about the goals they even set in the first place.
Just by writing your goals down you are ~42% more likely to achieve your goals.
- Brain dump
- Set your buckets
- Identify your annual goal
- Set sub-goals quarterly
- Review goals weekly
Identify Your Goals
Start with a brain dump.
Sit down and think about what you want to achieve this year. Some goals may seem out of reach, like ambitious job targets, while others might be simpler and more achievable. Without taking the time to think about them, you might forget these goals.
Use a pen and paper to jot down everything you want to accomplish this year.
Categorise Your Goals
Break your goals into different areas of your life.
Focus on areas such as health, relationships, work, and wealth. These categories might differ for you, but they provide a structured approach. From your brain dump, identify an overall annual goal for each area and write down why each goal is important.
Understanding the "why" gives your goals deeper meaning and helps prioritise your time.
Break Down Your Goals
Divide each area into sub-goals for the quarter.
Think of two, three, or four sub-goals for each area you want to work on in the first quarter. This creates buy-in and allows you to see your progress. Writing down your goals is crucial; studies show that doing so makes you approximately 42% more likely to achieve them.
It provides a sense of progress and allows you to track your achievements without feeling overwhelmed by long-term objectives.
Example: Running a Half Marathon
For instance, one of my goals is to run a half marathon in September.
My “why” for this goal is to establish consistency with a running habit. Knowing I have a marathon scheduled means i’ll need to run regularly. Last year I was running sporadically, but this year building consistency is going to be key.
I’m also doing it for my overall general fitness levels.
For the half marathon, my sub-goals for this quarter include:
- Devising a training plan
- Running twice a week consistently
- Alcohol free 3 months
These are manageable goals that I can track daily and weekly, helping me move toward my annual goal.
Review Your Goals Regularly
Review your goals daily and weekly.
Your sub-goals provide something to look forward to and reflect on throughout the days, weeks, and months. Regularly reviewing your goals keeps them at the forefront of your mind and allows for ongoing reflection. Integrate this practice into your daily and weekly routines, assessing your weekly goals derived from your quarterly objectives.
Apply Goal Setting to Football
For football scouts and analysts, goal setting is essential for advancing your career while remaining present and reflective.
Sit down and have a brain dump of your goals. What do you want to achieve this year? Write them down on paper. Then, plan these goals into specific areas of your life, such as work, personal development, health, or wealth.
Take this action right now.
Many of your goals will likely focus on personal and professional development within football. Consider:
- What courses do you want to take this year?
- How many jobs do you want to apply for in the football industry?
- Do you want to join a football community for feedback on your work?
- Do you need to create an online portfolio?
Reflect on what you want to achieve this year, and turn those reflections into goals for each area of your life.
By following this structured approach, you can effectively set and achieve your goals in 2025.
This method not only helps you stay organised but also ensures that you remain focused on your personal and professional development.
Embrace goal setting and watch as your opportunities and development in football grow this year.
I hope this helps to kickstart you 2025.
Have a fantastic week, and go well.
